11/13/2003 NSF Looking For Food Safety Award Nominations

"For the past 60 years, NSF has worked closely with stakeholders from the food equipment industry, food service organizations and the regulatory community to help raise the bar for food safety standards," said NSF President and CEO Kevan P. Lawlor. "The Food Safety Leadership Awards Program allows us to recognize achievements worldwide that have a positive, lasting impact for consumers and industry alike."

NSF assembled a panel of jurors to review the nominations. The panel includes:

-Association of Food & Drug Officials -- Ellen Layman, Oregon Department of Agriculture
-Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- Dr. Arthur Liang, director, Food Safety Office
-National Food Safety & Toxicology Center at Michigan State University -- Dr. Ewen Todd, director
-Illinois Institute of Technology, National Center for Food Science & Technology
-National Restaurant Association, Educational Foundation -- Mary Adolf, president
-Institute of Food Technologists, Foodservice Division -- Dr. Simon Livings, chairman
International Association for Food Protection
-NSF International Council of Public Health Consultants -- Steve Tackitt, director, Environmental Health Division, Wayne County Department of Public Health Food Safety Research Consortium

On Nov. 7, 2003, NSF will begin reviewing nominations in six general categories:

-Technology breakthroughs
-Research advances
-Equipment design
-Product development
-Packaging innovation
-Systems improvements

Also to be announced, the NSF Lifetime Achievement Award, which will recognize food safety leaders who have contributed uniquely to advancing food safety. NSF staff will act as the coordinating body to initially review and organize nominations for each award category, and then distribute this information to each panel member for further evaluation.

"Ultimately, we envision that this new awards program will foster individual creativity and innovation that culminate in the development of many groundbreaking advances that make a lasting difference for consumers," concludes Lawlor.
