12/29/2003 USDA Confirms Age of BSE-infected Cow Pre-dates Feed Ban - 12/ 29 Feedstuffs

Previously, USDA reported that the cow was four to four-and-a-half years old. USDA's top veterinary official, Dr. Ron DeHaven, said clarification of the animal's age means the cow with BSE was born before the U.S. and Canada imposed feed bans on mammalian protein in August 1997. DeHaven also reported USDA has learned that eight additional animals from the same herd in Alberta were imported into the U.S. and that those animals are being traced along with the other 73 animals that came with the cow.

Meanwhile, Alberta's cattle industry is reeling from suspicions the Holstein cow diagnosed with BSE in the U.S. came from a farm near Edmonton, Alb., the Edmonton Sun reported today. USDA and Canadian officials are conducting tests on DNA from the cow in Washington and semen from her sire in Canada and other related animals to confirm identity.
