Statement of Support for U.S. FDA Draft Risk Assessment on
Livestock Cloning
We support and agree with the FDA’s
conclusion as stated in the science-based Draft Risk Assessment* that
edible products from healthy cloned animals and progeny of cloned
animals pose no additional food consumption risks relative to corresponding
products from other animals. Based on the available scientific information
reviewed in the Draft Risk Assessment, animal cloning technology
is shown to be safe and produces safe food.
In addition, the FDA is in agreement with the National Academy of Sciences**, which concluded that “The products of offspring of clone(s) were regarded as posing no food safety concern because they are the result of natural matings,” and “In summary there is no current evidence that food products derived from adult somatic cell clones or their progeny present a food safety concern.”
As concluded by the FDA, the progeny of cloned animals, produced through sexual reproduction, are not clones and are as healthy and normal as the progeny of any other animals. Therefore we support the FDA’s conclusion that the food they produce is the same as the food produced by any other animals.
The FDA’s Draft Risk Assessment is one of the most comprehensive science-based examinations of the health of cloned livestock to date, and of whether food from cloned animals and their progeny pose any risk to humans upon consumption, compared to other assisted reproductive technologies. We fully support the thorough and strictly science-based review of animal health and food consumption risks associated with animal cloning. Therefore, animal cloning may be safely used in food production.
