Dr. David Meeker has joined The Federation of Animal Science Societies Office of Scientific Liaison (OSL), based in Bethesda, Maryland. As the Interim Scientific Liaison, Meeker will represent the member societies and present a unified scientific voice to decision making bodies in the Washington, D.C. arena. One of the main missions of the position will be to generate advocacy and support for increased funding of animal agriculture research. As well, Meeker will serve as FASS representative to scientific organizations, government officials, industry groups, and coalitions.

The Integrated Research, Education and Extension Competitive Grants Program is accepting applications for the agencies National Integrated Food Safety Initiative area. Proposals are due to CSREES by Dec. 19. Grants will support agricultural research, extension and education activities that address food safety priorities. CSREES also requests stakeholder comment on developing an RFP for next year’s competition. more

OFRF Announces Spring Deadline
The Organic Farming Research Foundation is adding a Dec. 15 deadline for spring projects to its existing July 15 deadline for grant applications. OFRF funds research on organic food and farming systems and the dissemination of research results to interested growers. Projects should involve farmers in design and implementation. OFRF may also support educational programs that benefit a significant number of organic farmers. The average grant awarded is $7,600 and matching funds are encouraged. OFRF is interested in funding research that takes places in certified organic systems and does not usually sponsor work comparing conventional and organic practices. more
