The School of Animal Sciences is seeking an Equine Extension Specialist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The position is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track, 100% extension appointment. The individual will be expected to develop and provide leadership for a comprehensive statewide equine extension program working closely with individual parish Ag & natural resource (ANR) agents, area equine agents, individual parish 4-H agents and with the Louisiana equine industry. The equine specialist will provide leadership for the Louisiana Master Horseman Program as well as Statewide ANR and 4-H equine programs. The Master Horseman program is designed to teach volunteers how to conduct educational workshops on a variety of horse management topics such as basic horse nutrition, horse evaluation, animal health care and horsemanship. The statewide 4-H equine program includes organizing and conducting educational workshops for 4-H members in the equine project as well as activities such as youth horse shows and other youth events. The equine specialist will also be expected to author and publish Extension publications and a statewide newsletter covering topics important to the Louisiana horse industry and to horse owners. The equine specialist will also be expected to participate in and contribute to the national eXtension equine Community of Practice (Horsequest). A minimum of a Ph.D. in Animal Science or closely related field with an emphasis on horse production and horsemanship is required. Candidates must have a strong background in horse production and excellent written and oral communication skills. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
