The Center for Veterinary Medicine, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is seeking animal scientists or food animal veterinarians to serve in the Division of Production Drugs as a reviewer of scientific data to support the safety and effectiveness of production drugs used in food animals. Responsibilities will include the determination whether an application to market a new animal drug should be approved based on scientific grounds, governing laws, and regulations. The reviewer will determine the safety and effectiveness of the drug by assessing the significance of risks involved in using the drug compared with production oriented or nutritional benefits. The reviewer will also assess the adequacy of labeled warnings and directions for use. The reviewer will consult with FDA chemists, toxicologists, biometricians, veterinarians, and attorneys involved in the science and policy of the drug approval process. The reviewer will meet with technical and regulatory staff from the pharmaceutical industry, to discuss the roadmap to approval, appropriate experimental design in the development of protocols, feedback for on-going studies, and review of submitted data. The reviewer also meets with regulators from other countries and agencies to collaborate on common regulatory issues. Credentials: A Ph.D. in the Animal Sciences or DVM/VMD with food animal interest is required. Experience in animal nutrition, physiology, genetics, or management is highly desirable. A background in experimental design and statistics is also desirable. Excellent writing and verbal skills as well as computer proficiency are necessary.
