Crop Diversification Classes for Farmers Starting Soon

For current and previous tobacco growers that have considered the idea of crop diversification and would like to know more about the growing and marketing of high value horticultural crops, Carl Cantaluppi, Area Horticulture Agent with the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Granville and Person Counties, would like to invite them to come to a short course.

The short course will consist of two classes, each one having different topics, so an individual should come to both classes to benefit from all the topics discussed. It will be held at the Granville County Extension Center, 208 Wall Street, in Oxford, on Thursday, October 23 and Thursday, October 30 from 7-9 P.M.

The topics planned for the two classes are as follows:

Growing Specialty Crops on a Small Scale
Getting Started in Vegetable Production
Know Your Costs of Production to Realize a Profit
Growing the Cool Season Vegetables
Growing the Warm Season Vegetables
Vegetable Insect and Disease Identification and Control
Growing Strawberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, and Grapes
Marketing Options for Fruit and Vegetable Growers

The time spent on each topic will vary, depending on the interest of the class; however, all the topics will be covered by the end of the second class.

There will be a $10.00 fee to cover the cost of a notebook that will be filled with the materials used in the class. A couple may register for $10.00 and will receive one notebook. It is recommended that you pre-register so that we will know how many notebooks to make. Make your check payable to Granville County and mail to:
Granville County Extension, P.O. Box 926, Oxford, NC 27565.

You can also pre-register over the phone by calling 919-603-1350 and pay at the door if you wish. For more information, contact Carl Cantaluppi at 919-603-1350, or e-mail him at carl_cantaluppi@ncsu.edu (note the underscore between first and last name).
