3/5/2003 Poultry Disease Outbreak Costs Government $35 Million - 3/1 Supermarket Guru

The task force formed to deal with the problem has cost the state of California $13 million and the federal government $22 million. The poultry and egg industries are also finding themselves drowning in high costs for disinfection and biosecurity upgrades as well as losses of approximately $2 million in sales and 5 percent of their business due to export bans. About 2.1 million birds have been destroyed.

The USDA along with California’s Governor Gray Davis declared states of emergency across the southern parts of the state, widely expanding the quarantine zone that prohibits movement of all poultry, poultry products, and nesting materials. The last time California saw an outbreak of this disease was in the early 1970’s which cost the government around $56 million. Egg prices are currently not affected yet by the outbreak. Government officials are working quickly to exterminate all traces of Newcastle disease, so the poultry industry can begin recovery.
