    Director of Publications/Managing Editor

    Responsibilities
    FASS Inc., is seeking a Director of Publications/Managing Editor to manage all activities for scientific publications produced at FASS.

    Duties include

    • Oversee operation of publications department
    • Serve as a resource for FASS and its clients
    • Contribute to the strategic development of the journals and work with others to assess, define, and oversee the implementation of journal strategy
    • Annual budgeting for the department and negotiating contracts with outside vendors
    • Responding to client needs and inquiries
    • Collaborate on non-journal projects with other staff
    • Managing peer-review support for editors, authors, and reviewers. Assist with technical support when needed.
    • Oversee production of journals and monitor workflow of articles and issues, ensuring timely and accurate production and author satisfaction with the process
    • Working with editors-in-chief and societies to develop and implement journal strategy
    • Responding to author inquiries and assisting as needed
    • Regularly reviewing and updating journal websites, author instructions, and peer-review system letters
    • Assisting with marketing and collaborating with publisher on these efforts
    • Staying abreast of developments in scientific publishing
    • Collaborate on non-journal projects with other staff

    Who You Are...

    • Required: Have a minimum of five-seven years of experience in the field of scientific journal publishing with increasing levels of responsibility. Experience supervising others is also required.
    • Hold a Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, science, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
    • Proficient with MS Office Suite, Adobe applications, and comfortable with new software and systems.
    • Able to supervise, manage, train, and mentor a staff of 9 to help them succeed in their positions. Conduct performance evaluations and assist staff with goal setting.
    • Have advanced knowledge of editorial processes, scientific peer review and publishing, and editorial style manuals (Chicago Manual Style, Scientific Style and Format, AMS Style Manual).
    • Have breadth of knowledge in publication ethics, licensing, and journal marketing, planning, and outreach.
    • Have knowledge of peer-review systems, Editorial Manager and ScholarOne Manuscripts a plus.
    • Have knowledge of and experience with publishers such as Elsevier, Whiley, etc.
    • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Have the ability to handle multiple projects effectively, take last-minute requests, and work well under pressure.

    Managing Editor

    Responsibilities

    HR Specialist (Part Time)

    Responsibilities
    In collaboration with the executive director, responsible for developing and implementing the HR strategy for the company. This includes HR strategic planning, total rewards, talent acquisition, benefits, retention, learning & development, diversity & inclusion, safety, and risk management. Recommends, develops, and implements policies and procedures which drive employee engagement leading to successful business outcomes. As an HR department of one, is responsible for wearing many hats and conducting a mixture of strategic and tactical HR duties including recruiting, benefit enrollments, and payroll.

    This position is part-time 15-30 hours a week.

    Accountabilities

    • Recommend, develop, and implement the HR strategy for FASS, Inc., working in conjunction with the executive director on strategic and organizational development HR initiatives to ensure board of director and company goals are being achieved.
    • Ensure FASS benefit plans maintain compliance with DOL, ERISA, and HIPAA plan regulations; accurately manage FASS Welfare Benefit Plan, Section 125 Plan, and 403(b) Plan with fiduciary prudence.
    • Oversee casualty and safety programs at FASS.
    • Conduct tactical HR activities on a day-to-day and as-needed basis, including bi-weekly processing of payroll.

    Who You Are...

    • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Business, HR, Organizational Development, or related field required.
    • PHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred, or ability to obtain with six months.
    • Minimum of five years of experience in one or more aspects of human resources management.
    • At least three years of experience with benefits administration required.
    • Previous experience with Accounting is a plus.

    The FASS Job Resource Center, a common service of FASS members and clients, was created to promote the efficient linking of open positions with scientists, in support of the tax exempt mission of each of the participating societies, to serve and advance the field of animal science and ensure its efficient operation. Members of any one of the FASS clients are provided with the opportunity to notify the scientific community of openings online for a reasonable fee. Nonmembers may also post position announcements online according to a separate fee schedule.

    The cost for posting a position opening is $150 for anyone who is a member of ADSA, AAFCO, AETA, ARPAS, ESS, IETS, ISAG, and NCFAR. This fee includes online announcements.
