10/30/2003 Ag Appropriations Bill Heads to Senate - 10/24 Agriculture Law
"Unfavorable weather conditions, uncertainties involved with international trade and record-high input costs have produced a turbulent and difficult time for agriculture," Stallman said. "Changes in farm bill programs would be devastating to not only farmers and ranchers, but the rural economy as well."
Stallman urged senators to provide uninterrupted funding for farm bill conservation programs such as the Conservation Security Program and the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. Those programs help producers comply with environmental regulations and address conservation issues, and require adequate funding in order to be successful, Stallman said.
Two provisions AFBF supports are also included in the ag appropriations bill: the farm bill's energy title, which includes provisions for alternative energy, such as bio-refinery grants, a biodiesel fuel education program and research and development on biomass, and Country-of-origin labeling (COOL). AFBF says it supports COOL as passed in the 2002 Farm Bill.
