Report of the FASS Scientific Advisory Committees
October 1, 2002, FINAL

Objective:
The FASS Scientific Advisory Committees (SAC) to author a library of brief summaries of scientific knowledge on animal science/animal agriculture topics to support FASS liaison with governmental agencies and Congress, as well as other organizations.

Audience:
Governmental agencies, Members of Congress, staffers, other organizations, media.

Name of Publication:
FASS State of the Science (SOS)…(specific topic title)

Key Goals:
Subject matter should provide up-to-date scientific status on selected animal science/animal agriculture topics.

Scientific summary should provide a unified voice for livestock and poultry scientists.

Scientific summary must include Committee review, unanimous agreement of the FASS SAC members, and distribution to FASS Board, Presidents, President Elect and Executive Director of each Member Society, according to procedure in the "FASS Policies and Procedures" (2000, http://www.fass.org/board/default.asp, amended 2002).

Topics should provide clarity to current discussion within new regulations, policy-making and laws.

Format Goals:
Brevity, ie, about 600-words, and readability.

Timeliness.

Inclusion of scientific references from peer–reviewed publications.

Long Range Goals:
Each FASS SAC to have a library of SOS documents pertinent to their issues.

Public release will include web posting, press release.
